Victorian clubs from all districts are invited to become involved in sponsoring participants in two very special interstate Youth Challenge sails on South Australia’s ship, ‘One & All’ in 2023.
The expansion of the Rotary Youth Challenge Sailing Program into Victoria, where a Youth Challenge Sail Committee has just been formed, will be enhanced by these special voyages in conjunction with the Rotary International World Convention in Melbourne.
The first 7-day sail will voyage from Adelaide to Melbourne prior to the Convention; the second will return from Melbourne to Adelaide after its conclusion.
As part of the Rotary International Convention, One & All will also be taking Conference delegates on short lunch and dinner cruises on the Yarra River from Docklands.

Club members recently donated school supplies for Timor Leste at the meeting on Feb 2nd. Maria loaded all the donations into Suzanne Zammit's car a boot for delivery to DIK awaiting shipment in due course.
Catrione, daughter of PP Jamie Robertson and Suong Nguyen is well known to many of our members who have watched her grow up. Her first official connection with Rotary was when our club sponsored her to the National Youth Science Forum around 10 years ago and since then her career in Science has been outstanding and extensive. One area that she is focussing on is Science Communication – helping the general population to understand scientific information necessary for everyday life. The COVID pandemic showed how important this area is in providing accessible information and in helping to counteract pseudo-science. Her communication skills are outstanding and engaging.
The latest District 9800 Foundation News contains articles concerning the End Polio Now programme. Over the last 35 years Rotary has been an important partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative which has decreased the number of wild polio cases worldwide by 99.9%. At the end of 2022 there were 30 cases reported, 2 in Afghanistan, 20 in Pakistan and 8 in Mozambique. It is estimated that if eradication efforts ceased today, within 10 years polio could paralyse as many as 200,000 children annually.

As mentioned in the last Bulletin Jama Farah has begun developing a further project to assist medical care in the Horn of Africa. The initial donation of dialysis machines from the Austin has been supplemented by a large donation of supeceded but perfectly functioning equipment from Western Health. This latest donation includes an ultrasound scanner, three ECG machines, four ventilators, infusion pumps and thirteen reverse osmosis filters for dialysis machines.
The plan is to obtain a container and ship a container of equipment in the first half of 2023.
Kensington Primary School held a fundraising drive to purchase stationery supplies for two small, remote schools.The boxes of pencils, books, rulers etc. are now at DIK waiting for the next shipment to Timor Leste which will be early in 2023. This shipment will support around 80 children at the two schools.
A request for help from PDG Ross Butterworth to help WERN with flood relief. WERN is a charity changing lives every day for those marginalised in our society or suffering trauma threough emergency situations. WERN is made up from people and organisations wanting to make a difference.
Victoria has been hit by significant storms and flooding throughout the state. Our neighbours need our help, with cash, furniture and our time.

These books will find homes in universities, hospitals and medical practices in African Countries. This generous donation from McGraw Hill will improve the health outcomes for many people.

Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests. I would like to thank you all for your company on this occasion as I enter the role of President of the Rotary Club of Footscray District 9800. I consider it an honor that you considered me up to the task of this role. I am grateful to be in this position and I aim to carry out my responsibilities to the best of my abilities. We are living in a strange moment, where it seems that no one really knows what to do next. These are the moments where people look for guidance and leadership to show them the way.
We were honoured to have in attendance District Governor Phillip Archer, District Governor Elect Dale Hoy and Assistant Governor Michael Donnelly at the Changeover Ceremony. It was also pleasing to have club honorary member PDG John Davis attend. Due to family illness President elect Jama Farah was unable to attend the Zoom meeting.
The highlight of the meeting was the DG presenting a Paul Harris award to Emanuel Tumino for his service to District 9800’s Youth Exchange program over many years.

With our support, Jamie attended the London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) in August.
Over a two week period the residential event held at Imperial College London & The Royal Geographical Society, involved 500 students (16-21 years) from 70 countries attending lectures and demonstrations from leading scientists, visiting world class laboratories and universities combined with cultural interaction. All welcome to attend and here about Jamie's experience.

President Suzanne, club members, partners and friends of Footscray Rotary mourn the loss of one of its great stalwarts. As a member for 67 years, Lauchie was a contributor, friend, and gentleman throughout. He will be sadly missed by all and we extend our sympathies to Marie and the whole family for their loss.
Following a request from Western Health to produce face masks, Past President Carol Castano has formed a team of Rotarians and friends. Production is well under way. Carol has made 30 adult, and 10 children’s masks herself whilst one of the amazing team has made 120! There are 10 team members, working on the project, including Faye Lanyon from Pt Gellibrand Rotary Club, and 7 of from Caesia Gardens Retirement Village, 5 of whom belong to the Village Rotary Craft Group. Carol says,”it’s good to be able to do such a small thing to help out”

A successful dinner with auction was held on Saturday 22nd in conjunction with the Footscray Art Prize. Guest speaker Mary Long gave a thought provoking presentation "Business and Art -Strange Bedfellows”. Funds raised will support our youth programs. Thanks to Bruce Postle, Oslo Davis and Susan Dang for the works they donated for the live auction. Many club members donated a diverse range of items for silent auction.
