Meeting April 24th
The speaker at our meeting on April 24 was David J Dobney -Rotary Ambassador to School of St. Jude in Tanzania
The School motto 'Fighting poverty through education' is an ongoing Rotary Australia program incorporating International Service and Youth and Community development. Education can lift an entire population out of poverty, creating stable and growing economies; 80% of St Jude graduates' families have overcome extreme poverty.
The School of St.Jude commenced with the mission to provide free, quality education to high performing students from diverse backgrounds in Northern Tanzania.
Today scholarships, funded mostly by Australians, assist in supporting 1800 students in Primary and Secondary School, as well as over 300 graduates in tertiary education through the Beyond St.Judes program.
Across Tanzania the average adult has 5.8 years of schooling and 92% do not access higher education. The success of the St Judes program is evident in that of the 1000 students at St Judes who have complete secondary education, 97% have gone onto higher education.
