fundraising for 21st container: lifesaving medical equipment for Dubti Referral Hospital –
lifeline of the Afar Regional State of Ethiopia. Dubti Referral Hospital is the main, and often only, fully functional referral hospital serving the entire Afar Regional State in northeastern Ethiopia.
Located in Dubti town in Zone 1, about 10 km from the regional capital Samara and roughly 598 km from Addis Ababa, it is a critical lifeline for more than one million people across
this harsh, remote region..
As the central referral hub, Dubti treats complex medical and surgical cases, severe malnutriton, and life-threatening emergencies. Its services include medical, surgical, paediatric and gynaecology departments, as well as a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) caring for some of the region’s most vulnerable newborns.
Despite this, the hospital is under enormous strain. Recurrent conflict, drought, displacement and poverty have led to conflict-related injuries, acute nutritional crises and overwhelming demand for care. Infrastructure limitations and shortages of equipment make it difficult for staff to provide safe, reliable services.
With our partners, Australian Afar Society, Rotary Club of Footscray, Australian Light Foundation and others, we hope to raise the $25,000 needed to ship the 21st 40-foot container to Dubti Referral Hospital in the Afar Regional State in
northeastern Ethiopia through the Port of Djibouti.
