April Bulletin 2022

Dear Rotarians,

It is with some trepidation that I produce my first Bulletin using the digital format that Pragya Kapil has been using over the last couple of years.

We have been fortunate that Pragya Kapil took over the editorship of our Bulletin and established the digital version following years of loyal service by Diane McGrath who produced a Bulletin in PDF format.

As mentioned in her last Bulletin Pragya has a teaching appointment in Dubbo and she is no longer able to fulfill this role. She has kindly spent time on Zoom teaching me to set up the reports on our website that then become our Bulletin. The content may be limited until I get the hang of the format and there have been many drafts in producing this edition!

Sincere thanks to Pragya for her work and we extend our best wishes to her as she begins her teaching career.

Since the last Bulletin we have had:

  • a visit from DG Dale Hoy and AG Tony Laycock
  • a presentation on hydrogen powered cars from Toyota
  • a fundraising golf day at Sanctuary Lakes.
  • A presentation from Daniel Santangeli Artistic Director and Co CEO of Footscray Community Arts Centre.

Unfortunately, we have received the news of the passing of Past President Ron Austin on March 24th.

At our meeting on April 21st our speaker will be Kat Bekemeier who was an exchange student from Germany (Bochum), hosted by the Rotary Club of Bendigo Sandhurst in 2007/2008.  She was one of District 9800 Youth Exchange Students in the year the Rotary Club of Footscray hosted District Conference in Shepparton. Kat is now a back in Australia as an executive with ALDI.

Hopefully you have all had a pleasant Easter.

The President’s column April

After lockdown delays prevented us from holding our Golf Day last October, or indeed the past two years, it was finally held on Friday, 25 March at Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club. I don’t have the financial outcome to hand but the day itself was a great success and plaudits and laurel wreaths go to Ron Hunt, Elia Andriotis and Rodney Johnstone for its planning, coordination and promotion. On the day they were supported by Julie Carroll, the raffle ticket enforcer, and Graeme Thompson, photographer at large (no doubt you’ll see his efforts elsewhere in the bulletin). Of course, or is that off-course, we had club golfers to swell the ranks and invite friends. It was a self-evidently enjoyable day and was a good foundation on which to work for future annual golf days.

Legend of Rotary

Congratulations to Lawrence Atley. April marks 50 years of his association with the Rotary Club of Footscray as a member and honorary member. A full report on his significant contribution to Rotary will feature in the next Bulletin.

Vale Ron Austin

Past President Ron Austin passed away recently. Ron was President 1987-88 and received Paul Harris recognition in 1994.

During his tenure as President the Probus Club of Footscray was chartered and he later became a member.

Our condolensces to Ron's family.

Golf Day

A very succesful fundraising Golf Day was held at Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club on March 25th.

Forty four players registered and hit off after breakfast in the club house, competing using the Ambrose format.

The winning team was led by Nick Barker of BTR Constructions whilst the team of Rodney Johnstone, Phillip and Adam Caruso and John Casey were runners up.

The raffle for a large tool cabinet and tools, donated by Kincrome, was won by Vince Mezzatesta who has been a great supporter of our golf days and always manages to win a prize!

Over $300 was raised for our local projects. Thanks again to our sponsors.

Speaker 7th April

We welcomed Daniel Santangeli as our speaker April 7th. Daniel is Artistic Director and Co CEO of Footscray Community Arts Centre (FCAC).
He spoke about the Centre, its history, mission, staffing, funding and plans for development.
The centre is a highly sought after space for exhibitions with a waiting list of two years.
Programs supporting artists from First Nations heritage and those with disabilities were highlighted.
Bern Fitzgerald the Senior Producer at FCAC also attended and participated in the Q&A that followed Daniel's Presentation.
The links between the Rotary Club of Footscray and FCAC are appreciated.

RYPEN

A successful RYPEN Camp has just been completed. 16 students, 5 Supporters and 3 Rotarians attended. The students were 15-17 year olds in years 9, 10 or 11. The supporters are the enthusiastic young people who voluntarily give up their weekends to act as team leaders for the students, and the Rotarians are the members of the RYPEN Committee including Suzanne Zammit.

Suzanne found it such a breath of fresh air to be at Doxa encouraging the students to explore and step into their potential and they so do.
The gains the students make from participating in the activities are amazing and it feels like 16 new people said sad farewells to their new friends and headed home on Sunday afternoon.

Melbourne Convention Host Hospitality night

Monday 29th May 2023 is the Melbourne Convention Host Hospitality night

Rotarians who are registered for the Convention can apply to host between 4 and 8 international and interstate guests in their home for dinner. Priority for hosting will be given to Registered Convention attendees but non-attendee Rotarians are also welcome to apply.

It is the responsibility of the Hosts to arrange transport for all their guests to and from your home. It is for this reason that we ask that only Rotarians who live within an approximate 15 km radius of the CBD should apply. Pickups will be from 6 p.m. unless otherwise agreed with guests.
