Lawrence Atley - 50 years in Rotary

The contributing individual and the worldwide community …

It is that persistent story that has forged Rotary International - our organisation of men and women who, individually and together, seek to improve the quality of lives locally, nationally and on the world’s stage. It is inspiring, involving and selfless. No-one epitomizes the essence of that Rotary creed more than our own Lawrence Atley. This year, the once young Footscray architect and esteemed member of this Club, is celebrating a truly golden 50 years of outstanding contribution and service.

Lawrence’s achievements in Rotary, and at the Rotary Club of Footscray are well documented. After a fast track ascension to Club president, Lawrence accepted the nomination to be our District Governor in 1989-90. The Conference was held in Canberra and marked the District’s first occasion where women registered as full members.

Lawrence served a term as chairman of the Rotary Foundation, as well being the Rotary International World President’s representative at three District conferences. When Footscray’s own John Davis became District Governor, Lawrence served as Chairman of the District Committee. In the Footscray community he was a member of the Western Hospital board for 15 years (Chairman for 3) and oversaw the Club’s 80th Anniversary at the Melbourne Town Hall. Recognition came with a Distinguished Service Award and an OAM. The onset of Parkinson’s meant restrictions. Typically undaunted, Lawrence unshackled his artistic flair and raised over $2000 for neurological research. Through the half century of achievement and drama, Margaret has been Lawrence’s rock solid and ever cheerful partner. So, on this very special Footscray occasion, we congratulate them both on 50 magnificent years.

Lawrence pre-recorded a video message which was played at changeover.
