Meeting June 6th

Start Well - Finish Brilliantly
The Vice Chancellor of Victoria University, Professor Adam Schumacher spoke at our meeting on June 6th. He spoke with great pride and enthusiasm of the university’s innovation in the tertiary education sector, improving student outcomes and student satisfaction
Prof Schumacher believes the “flipped” campus is the campus of the future and this already a feature at some of the campuses of VU. The model connects tertiary education both higher degrees and TAFE with industry and provides opportunities for research. VU embraces the flipped campus where at least one industry partner is physically situated on campus. This allows a wide range of students to be actively involved in education and work placements, internships and in some fields the opportunity to work directly with the public.

The model for provision of tertiary education around the world has not changed in recent times. There are only two universities from anywhere in the world, that are providing alternative models and both are in Melbourne. One is the University of Melbourne with the Melbourne Model and the other is Victoria University with The Block Model. In the Block Model students study one subject intensively for four weeks and will have exams at the end of the four weeks. Over the course of a year the students will study ten subjects. Malaysia who has had a 30 year partnership with VU has also introduced the Block Model.

The opening of Footscray Hospital and its partnership with VU will provide the Western suburbs with a world class facility that promotes strong connections with students undertaking higher degrees and TAFE as well as employment opportunities for local communities.
Last year VU had 6000 graduates employed by Western Health with1500 coming from the TAFE sector and 3500 with higher degrees.
The university and the hospital will be connected by a bridge. There will be a whole building dedicated to research and another to preventative health.

VU works to have outcomes that benefit people, place and the planet. The student population is peaceful, religiously and racially diverse with the standard of student outcomes being the same as other universities. Reputations take time to build and VU is definitely making a name for itself.

Victoria University is changing education around the world. It is already listed at number 7 in the world for Sports Science.
